Are gymnosperms homosporous?

Open in App
Solution

Gymnosperms:

  1. Gymnosperms refer to vascular plants in which ovules are not enclosed inside the ovary wall.
  2. Example: conifers, gnetophytes, cycads, etc.
  3. Homosporous plants produce morphologically identical asexual spores. The gametophyte produced is dominant.
  4. Example: bryophytes and most of the pteridophytes.
  5. Gymnosperms are not homosporous. They are heterosporous plants.
  6. They produce two kinds of spores viz. microspores and megaspores. These sporophytes are dominant and morphologically dissimilar.
