Are halogens positive or negative?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Halogens are Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine and Astatine.
  2. They belong to the left-hand side of the periodic table in the 17th group. They are non-metals.
  3. Each halogen has seven electrons in its outermost (valence) shell. For acquiring stability each halogen takes up a single electron and acquires a negative charge.
  4. They exist as halide ions. For example- Chloride ion Cl-, Iodide ion I-.
  5. So, halogens are negatively charged.
