Are histones acidic or basic?

Open in App
Solution

Histones:

  1. Histones are positively charged proteins that are found in the nucleus.
  2. A unit of eight histones forms an octamer. They serve to pack and organize DNA and modulate gene regulation.
  3. The negatively charged DNA molecule is wrapped around the histone octamer, resulting in the formation of a structure called ‘nucleosome’.
  4. Histones proteins are basic. They predominantly contain two basic amino acids- lysine and arginine.
