Are Histones ...
Question
Are histones present in bacteria?
Open in App
Solution
Histones:
Histones are positively charged basic proteins that contain amino acids such as lysine and arginine.
The DNA molecule is wrapped around the histone octamer, resulting in the formation of a structure called ‘nucleosome’.
Histone proteins provide the chromosomes with their shape and control gene activity.
Bacteria are prokaryotes. They are unicellular organisms that lack a true nucleus and membrane-bound cell organelles.
Histones are not present in bacteria. However, Archaea possess histones except in Crenarchaeota.
