Question

Are infrasound waves transverse or longitudinal?

Open in App
Solution

Explanation:

  1. Longitudinal or compression waves are defined as waves where the particle motion is in the same direction in which the wave is propagating.
  2. Whereas, transverse waves cause the medium to move perpendicular to the direction of the wave.
  3. One of the prominent examples of infrasound waves is earthquake waves. There are three types of earthquake waves and they are known:
  4. S-wave which is transverse in nature
  5. P-wave which is longitudinal in nature
  6. L-wave which propagates along the boundary of stratified mediums

Thus, Infrasound waves can be transverse or longitudinal.
