Are Klinefelter males sterile?

Open in App
Solution

Klinefelter Syndrome

  1. It is a genetic condition where the males are born with an extra set of X-chromosomes.
  2. Instead of having a normal pair of XY chromosomes, they have XXY resulting in 47 chromosomes.
  3. These males have lower reproductive growth, and are always male but have some feminine characteristics due to lower testicular secretions.
  4. Lower secretions of testosterone also lead to underdeveloped sexual characters.
  5. These individuals show reduced muscle mass, body hair, and facial hair.
  6. Due to abnormal testicular growth, there is less production of sperm.
  7. Thus, Klinefelter males are sterile.
