Question

Are the majority of Pteridophytes homosporous?

Open in App
Solution

Pteridophytes:

  1. They are considered to be the first plants to be evolved on land. They evolved much earlier than the angiosperms & are seedless.
  2. They reproduce through spores. The majority of these plants are homosporous (same spores) and produce bisexual gametophytes.
  3. Few pteridophytes are heterosporous (produce microspores and megaspores) and produce unisexual gametophytes.
  4. Pteridophytes are also called cryptogams as they do not produce seeds or flowers.
  5. Examples of homosporous pteridophytes include puzzle grass and club moss and those of heterosporous pteridophytes include Salvinia.
