Archaea:

  1. They are single-celled prokaryotes.
  2. They live in extreme environmental conditions like highly saline & acidic regions, above the boiling point temperatures, etc.
  3. Examples- Aeropyrum pernix, Staphylothermus marinus, etc.

Methanogens:

  1. These anaerobic prokaryotes produce methane as a byproduct.
  2. All known methanogens belong to the domain Archaea.
  3. They inhabit a wide range of anaerobic habitats like hydrothermal vents, highly acidic aquatic regions, marshy areas, etc.
  4. Examples- Methanococcus, Methanobrevibacter, Methanobacterium, etc.
