Open in App
Solution

Independent existence:

  1. It is when an organism can survive without depending on anything.
  2. That is, they carry out essential life functions independently.
  3. Example- Unicellular organisms.
  4. Therefore, a cell is considered the fundamental unit of life.

Multicellular organisms

  1. In multicellular organisms, cellular specialization and labor division exists.
  2. Cells become efficient in one process and depend on other cells for the necessities of life.
  3. Example- Liver cells mainly help digest fats and detoxification. Whereas pancreatic cells mainly produce pancreatic juices and enzymes that aid in protein digestion.
  4. Therefore, multicellular organisms are not capable of independent existence. Disease in any of the essential organs has the potential to negatively impact other cells of the body.
