Question

Are plants anaerobic?

Open in App
Solution

Aerobic Respiration:

  1. In aerobic respiration, oxygen is required to take place in the reaction.
  2. They exchange gases between organisms and the outside environment.
  3. It takes place in the cytoplasm and mitochondria. Around 38 ATPs are generated.
  4. In this glucose breaks down into carbon dioxide and water.
  5. Higher organisms like mammals perform this type of respiration.

Anaerobic Respiration:

  1. In anaerobic respiration, oxygen is not required.
  2. They exchange gasses between organisms and the outside environment but oxygen does not take part.
  3. It takes place in the cytoplasm only. Around 2 ATPs are generated.
  4. In this glucose breaks down into ethyl alcohol, carbon dioxide and energy.
  5. Lower organisms like bacteria or other prokaryotes perform this type of respiration.
  6. Anaerobic respiration is also observed in some lower and nonvascular plants, including Bryophytes, etc.
  7. Thus, Plants are both aerobic and anaerobic.
