Question

Are prokaryotes asexual?

Open in App
Solution

Asexual reproduction:

  1. It occurs by mitosis and results in two or more genetically identical daughter cells (therefore, offspring are identical to parents).
  2. Only one parent is required, and therefore there is no fusion of gametes.
  3. Also, there is no intermixing of genetic information.
  4. Example- binary fission, fragmentation, etc.

Prokaryotes:

  1. Single-celled organisms lack a proper nucleus and other organelles.
  2. They can reproduce sexually or asexually.
  3. Examples of prokaryotes- are bacteria, archaea, and cyanobacteria.
  4. However, most of them (archaea and bacteria) reproduce asexually (most commonly by binary fission).
  5. The mode of reproduction depends on the factors like availability of resources, habitat, environmental conditions, etc.
