Question
Are prokaryotes gram-positive or gram-negative?
Open in App
Solution
Gram-positive:
Bacteria that retain the crystal violet color and stain purple are Gram-positive bacteria.
They have a thicker cell wall due to multiple thick peptidoglycan layers.
Peptidoglycan layers retain the stain after the decolorization step.
They usually produce exotoxins.
Example-
Streptococcus
,
Staphylococcus, etc.
Gram-positive prokaryotes:
Actinomyces, Corynebacterium, Mycobacterium
, etc.
Gram-negative:
Bacteria that lose crystal violet & stain red are Gram-negative bacteria.
They lack an outer membrane & have a thinner cell wall.
It is composed of thin peptidoglycan layers.
They generally produce endotoxins.
Gram-negative prokaryotes-
Salmonella
,
Escherichia,
etc.
Thus, prokaryotes can either be gram-positive or gram-negative.
