Ribosomes are the particles present in a large number of living organisms.
They are the significant sites of protein synthesis.
Ribosomes have two main functions- decoding the message from messenger RNA and the formation of peptide bonds in newly formed proteins.
These two activities reside in two large ribonucleoprotein particles (RNPs) of unequal size, the ribosomal subunits.
Each subunit is made of one or more ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs) and many ribosomal proteins (r-proteins).
Ribosomes occur both as attached particles on the endoplasmic reticulum (as Rough endoplasmic reticulum) and as free particles in prokaryotes and eukaryotes as well.
They are of different sizes in eukaryotes (larger 80S) compared to prokaryotes (smaller 70S).
