Question

Are succulents xerophytes?

Open in App
Solution

Xerophytes

  1. Plants that are adapted to survive in dry regions with very low availability of water are called xerophytes.
  2. These plants can grow in the dry arid deserts such as the Sahara or cold and snow-covered regions like the Arctic.
  3. They have adaptations which enhance water intake and storage and reduce loss of water.
  4. Few adaptations include deep root systems, reduced leaves, few stomata, presence of spines, and a thick cuticle layer.
  5. Pineapples, cacti, and a few gymnosperms are xerophytic in nature.

Succulent

  1. Plants that store water in thick fleshy tissues that are modified stem or leaves are called succulents.
  2. They are adapted to survive in dry arid regions with very low precipitation.
  3. Cactii, aloe vera and agave are some examples of succulent plants.
  4. Succulent plants are considered xerophytes.
  5. Succulent plants have developed specialized adaptations against low water content during dry periods.
  6. They inhibit photosynthesis during the day by constricting the stomata and during the night store carbon dioxide in storage vacuoles.
  7. The stored CO2 is used for the reaction to produce starch to reduce water loss.
  8. This adaptive pathway for energy and water conservation allows plants like cactus and pineapple to thrive in their habitat.
