Question

are uniform and definite composition the same?

Open in App
Solution

No they are not the same.

A uniform composition is one that is uniform throughout. e.g. you dissolve a gram of salt in 1 liter of water. This composition is uniform in that the salt molecules are distributed evenly throughout the solution.

A definite composition is a pure substance or element. 24 carat gold would be a definite composition. Pure reagent grade Sodium Chloride would be a definite composition in that there are no contaminants.
Explaining more - A substance with a definite composition is a pure substance, that is one with a specific formula. We usually use the term to distinguish a compound from a mixture. A mixture of iron and sulfur can have any ratio of iron to sulfur atoms, but the compound iron (II) sulfide always contains equal numbers of iron and sulfide ions, Its composition (the way it is made up) is defined (that is specified, or in this context, not capable of variation.)
