Question

Are viruses prokaryotes or eukaryotes

Open in App
Solution

Viruses are considered neither prokaryotes noreukaryotes because they lack the characteristics of living things, except the ability to replicate (which they accomplish only in living cells).

Eukaryotes: have well defines nucleus with nuclear membrane that house the chromosomes that are in pairs and have mitochondria and they divides on their own capability.

Prokaryotes do not have nucleus. They have their own well defined metabolic system and are able to divide( multiply) on their own effort.

Viruses: Comparatively very very small ( called particle, not cell), have none of the above. They are not even considered as living cells. They just inject the DNA or RNA they have ( just one type) in the host cells and dictates the host cells machineries to replicate their DNA or RNA and encase the nucleic acid.
