Question

Are volume fraction and mole fraction the same?

Open in App
Solution

The similarity of volume fraction and mole fraction is explained in following points:

  1. The volume fraction is volume of solute divided by volume of solution
  2. Mole fraction represents the number of molecules of individual component in a mixture divided by the total number of moles in the present mixture.
  3. For ideal gas, volume fraction of one ideal gas in a mixture is equivalent to its mole fraction due to negligible interaction between molecules.
  4. However for real gases, the mole fractions are not equivalent to the volume fractions because the interaction between the molecules can't be neglected..

Therefore, the similarity of volume fraction and mole fraction for both ideal gas and real gas is explained in above points.
