  1. Most true yeasts belong to the Ascomycetes class.
  2. Few of the organisms of this phylum are baker's yeast, Claviceps, Aspergillus, etc.
  3. There are around 64,000 known species of the phylum Ascomycota.
  4. It is considered one of the largest phyla under the kingdom of fungi.
  5. They are unicellular or multicellular which can have a saprophytic, parasitic, decomposing or coprophilous mode of nutrition.
  6. They produce ascospores which give rise to new individuals.
  7. Ascospores are sexual, non-motile spores.
  8. The sac-like structure in which ascospores are produced is called the ascus.
  9. Spores are the single-celled reproductive units found in non-flowering plants, algae, and bacteria.
