The ratio of the area of two squares is 4 : 9

Let the area of the first square be 4x and area of the second square be 9x

The area of a square = side2

Let the side of the first square be a and side of the second square of b

Hence 4x = a2 Hence a = 4x

For the second square 9x = b2 Hence b = 9x

Hence ratio of sides = a : b

= 4x : 9x

= 4 : 9 = 2 : 3
