Arithmetic progression is a sequence of numbers in which the difference between any two consecutive terms is
constant
An Arithmetic progression is a sequence of numbers in which the difference between any two consecutive terms is constant. This difference is referred to as the 'common difference'.
An AP can be generated by taking a number and adding a constant number to it repeatedly. This constant number is the common difference.
For example, the sequence of numbers 1, 3, 5, 7, …. is said to be in arithmetic progression because every term is obtained by adding a constant number, which is 2, to the preceding term. Here, 1 is the first term and 2 is the common difference.
