Solution

Given that, Arjun bought a rectangular plot whose length is “x” and breadth is “y”.

We know that the formula to find the area of the rectangular plot = Length × Breadth square units.

Substituting Length = x and breadth = y in the area formula we get,

Area of rectangular plot = x × y … (1)

It is also given that, a triangular part with base y and height z is sold.

Using the area of triangle formula, we can write

Area of triangular part = (½) × y × z … (2) [since the area of a triangle = ½ × base × height square units]

Hence, the area of the remaining part of the plot can be computed by subtracting the area of the triangular plot from the area of the rectangular plot.

I.e., Area of the remaining plot = Area of the rectangular plot - Area of triangular plot …(3)

Substituting (1) and (2) in equation (3), we get

Area of the remaining part of the plot = [xy] - [(½) × y × z]

= y[x - (z/2)]

Hence, the area of the remaining part of the plot is y[x - (z/2)] square units.
