In order to explain the splitting of line spectra, Arnold Sommerfeld modified the Bohr's model by adding elliptical orbits.

Sommerfeld retained the first of Bohr's circular orbits and added an elliptical orbit to his second orbit. Then, he added two elliptical orbits to Bohr's third orbit and so on. These additions were done in such a way that the nucleus of the atom was at one of the principle foci of these elliptical orbit.
