Evolution of life has been divided into different geological era.

Carboniferous period is the earliest of all which is during 300 - 350 mya . It is the time associated with extensive coal formation. Plants were the first organisms which invaded land. Later the animals evolved. Seed ferns and early reptiles evolved during this period.

Triassic period is between 250 - 200 mya where thecodonts evolved .

Jurassic period is between 200 -100 mya which is the longest of all periods. During this period herbaceous lycopods, ferns, conifers and cycads evolved. The giant reptiles, dinosaurus evolved during this period.

Cretaceous period is between 100 - 50 mya. During this period sphenopsids, Ginkgos, Gnetales and dicotyledons evolved. By this period dinosaurus had become extinct.

Tertiary period is 50 mya where highly evolved plants such as bryophytes, angiosperms (flowering plants), monocotyledons occured.
