Question

arrange the electrons represented by the following sets of quantum nos. in the decreasing order of energy for a multi electron atom: (1) n=4,l=0,m=0,s=+1\2, (2) n=3, l=1, m=1, s=-1\2 (3) n=3, l=2, m=0, s=+1\2 (4) n=3, l=0, m=0, s=-1\2

Solution

The various orbitals are(1) n=4,l=0,m=0,s=+1 /2 represents 4s(2) n=3, l=1, m=1, s=-1/ 2 represents 3p(3) n=3, l=2, m=0, s=+1 /2 represents 3d(4) n=3, l=0, m=0, s=-1/ 2 represents 3s(all these orbitals are assigned based on the n value as the starting numberand l decides the orbital. That is l=0 means s orbital, l=1 means p orbital,l=2 means d orbital, l=3 means f orbital)According to Aufbau principle,the order of decreasing energy is3d > 4s > 3p > 3s
