From the 7th century onwards, the evolution of temple architecture in Tamil Nadu can be divided into five epochs.
(1) The Pallava Epoch (600 to 850 CE)
(2) Early Chola Epoch (850 to 1100 CE)
(3) Later Chola Epoch (1100 to 1350 CE)
(4) Vijayanagara/ Nayak Epoch (1350 to 1600 CE)
(5) Modern Epoch (After 1600 CE).
