Question

Arrange the following compounds in increasing order of their property as indicated.
(i) CH3COCH3,C6H5COCH3,CH3CHO (reactivity towards nucleophilic addition reaction)
(ii) CICH2COOH,FCH2COOH,CH3COOH (acidic character).

Solution

(i) Nucleophiles are negatively entity positivity of carbon is carbonyl group facilitates nucleophilic addition. Thus, positivity of carbon in carbonyl carbon is so much decrease than (I) and (II). Thus, nucleophilic addition order III>I>II.

(ii) The stability order II>I>III, due to +I effect of CH3 group electron density of oxygen is more. But in (I) and (II), I effect of F is more than Cl. Thus, II is more stabilized than I. Thus, acidity order is II>I>III.
