Simon Commission arrived in India in 1929. They met with protests in all major cities of India. The British had to do something to win the Indian political leaders over. Hence, in October 1929, Lord Irwin announced an offer of ‘dominion status’ for India. Lord Irwin sweetened this offer with a Round Table Conference to discuss the future constitution of India. The conference to be held in 1930 was already boycotted by the Congress. In December 1929, Congress, under the presidency of Jawaharlal Nehru, met at Lahore to come to a consensus. They formalised the demand for Purna Swaraj.
