On 5 February 1922, in Chauri Chaura, a police officer, beat Congress workers for protesting in front of an arrack shop. Three thousand farmers protested outside the police station against this act. The police opened fire, and in return, the farmers torched the station. Gandhi was shocked by this incident as it was against Ahimsa and he withdrew non-cooperation movement on 12 February 1922. British held Gandhi responsible for all the violent uprisings and arrested him on 10 March 1922. Motilal Nehru and C.R Das in 1923 founded the Swaraj Party and contested the elections.
