Sun Yat-sen worked together with the Communist Party of China for a unified China. Chiang Kai-shek did not approve of the Communist ideology. The communists were forced to retreat into the mountains and stayed there in exile for 7 years. Mao Tse-tung organised the “Long March” in October 1934 to protect the communists against the attacks of the Kuomintang Party. Mao evolved as a leader by 1937, and established his base for communist takeover.
