Guru Arjan Devji became the fifth Guru in 1581, after the death of Guru Ram Dasji. In 1590-1595 he built cities like Kartarpur and Hargobindpur. He completed the construction of the Golden temple in 1604. By this time he had complied the Adi Granth Sahib and installed it in the temple. He declared Baba Budda as the first Granthi. In 1606, he nominated his son, Hargobind as his successor. In 1606, Jahangir ordered for his imprisonment and breathed his last in the same year.
