Solution

Conjugate bases of the given acids

Acidic strength depends on the stability of the conjugate base after the release of H+ ion.

The given compounds are CH3CH2OH,CH3COOH,ClCH2COOH,FCH2COOHandC6H5CH2COOH

Their respective conjugate bases are CH3CH2O,CH3COO,ClCH2COO,FCH2COOandC6H5CH2COO

Comparing the stabilities of the conjugate bases

1. Among the conjugate bases, CH3COO is more stable than CH3CH2O because the negative charge developed in CH3COO is stabilised by two equivalent resonating structures.

2. For XCH2COO[X=Cl,F,C6H5], theI (inductive) effect of X group will stabilise the negative charge developed in the following order: FCH2COO>ClCH2COO>C6H5CH2COO

Determining the acidic strength of the given acids

The order of stability of the conjugate bases of the given acids is: FCH2COO>ClCH2COO>C6H5CH2COO>CH3COO>CH3CH2O

Since acidic strength depends on the stability of the conjugate base, the decreasing order of acidic strengths will be:FCH2COOH>ClCH2COOH>C6H5CH2COOH>CH3COOH>CH3CH2OH
