Question

Arrange the following in increasing order of boiling points:
(CH3)3N,C2H5OH and C2H5NH2

Open in App
Solution

Boiling pointHydrogen bonding

In (CH3)3N, hydrogen bonding is absent.

In C2H5OH, inter-molecular hydrogen bonding exists and the extent of hydrogen bonding is greater due to the electronegativity of oxygen.

In C2H5NH2, inter-molecular hydrogen bonding is present to a lesser extent because the electronegativity of nitrogen is less than that of oxygen, so the order of boilling point will be:
C2H5OH>C2H5NH2>(CH3)3N
