Solution

In a hydroelectric power station, water is stored in a dam or reservior near the power station. As soon as the gates are lifted, the water flows from a height onto the turbines in the station which rotates them at high speed. The potential energy of the water is converted into the kinetic energy of the turbine. An electric generator is attached to the rotating turbine which thus yields electricity.
