Question

Arrange the following molecules in increasing order of energy : N2,O2,Cl2,F2.

Open in App
Solution

N2 has triple bond between N atoms.
O2 has double bond between O atoms.
F2 and Cl2 has single bonds between the atoms.
More the number of bonds between atoms, more will be the bond energy. Between F2 and Cl2, Cl2 has more bond energy because in F2, the atoms are closer and repulsions are more. So, bond energy of F2 is less.
Order of bond energies= N2>O2>Cl2>F2
