Question

Arrange the following numbers in descending order.

5.505, 5.055, 5.550

Open in App
Solution

Write the numbers in the place value table.

The whole part of all three numbers is the same, which is 5.
Comparing the digits of each decimal place by place with the other two:
Ones place: D1 = D2 = D3
Tenths place: D1 = D3 > D2
This means D2 is the smallest decimal.
Hundredths place:
D1 < D3
This means D3 is the greatest.
Thus, 5.550 is the greatest number.
So, 5.550 > 5.505 > 5.055.
