Question

Arrange the following on the increasing property given in bracket:
Pentan-1-ol, butan-1-ol, butan-2-ol, ethanol, propan-1-ol, methanol (Boiling Point)

Solution

Dear Chris,

As the carbon chain increases boiling point increases due to increase in surface area.
In case of same carbon chain but difference in degree of alcohol; in 3o alcohol the surface area is least (less bp) and maximum for 10 alcohol(high bp).
it means bp is maximum for pentan-1-ol and least for methanol.
Hence the increasing order of bp is methanol<ethanol<propan-1-ol<butan-2-ol<butan-1-ol<pentan-1-ol
