The British sought to control administration and annex Punjab. They wanted to capture Lahore, the capital of Punjab, but before attacking Lahore directly, they first captured Ferozepur in 1835 and established a military cantonment at Ferozepur in 1838. Maharaja Ranjit Singh died in 1839, and it was the perfect opportunity for the British to get their hands on Punjab. The British suffered defeat in the First Anglo-Afghan War in November 1841.
