Question

Arrange the following steps involved in binary fission in Amoeba in the correct order.

Open in App
Solution

The image shows the stages of binary fission in Amoeba.

Image (iii) shows Amoeba with pseudopodia. The pseudopodia are withdrawn as the cell prepares for binary fission as shown in the image (v). In Amoeba, simple binary fission occurs where the division can occur through any plane. The initiation of division is depicted in the image (ii). Here, as we can see, the cell organelles have already divided and the cell has grown in size (almost twice the original size). We can also see the nucleus dividing and ready to separate. The next stage is depicted by the image (iv) which is the pre-final stage of binary fission. Here karyokinesis (a division of the nucleus) has occurred and cytokinesis (cell division) is in progress. Two complete daughter cells which are a result of binary fission in the parent Amoeba are shown in the image (i).
