Question

Arrange the relevant points in the proper sequence for explaining why Kelvin scale is preferred to Celsius scale in the study of gases.
(a) 273o C is the least possible temperature.
(b) A graph of volume vs temperature is a straight line passing through origin.
(c) A graph of volume vs temperature (0C) is a straight line which intersects volume axis at some point
(d) Extrapolation of straight line touches the volume axis at 237oC
(e) 273o C is called absolute zero or 0 K.
(f) All values of temperature are positive in Kelvin scale.

Solution

The correct option is A c d a e f
For most gases there is a linear relationship between temperature and pressure (see gas laws ), i.e., gases contract indefinitely as the temperature is decreased. Theoretically, at absolute zero the volume of an ideal gas would be zero and all molecular motion would cease. In actuality, all gases condense to solids or liquids well above this point. Although absolute zero cannot be reached.Absolute zero point is 0 kelvin and below absolute zero temperature is not possible so that, kelvin negative scale is not posssible.
