During coalification, coal transforms itself through different stages and in each stage a different form of coal is obtained, each with different composition. Peat, lignite, bituminous and anthracite are different forms of coal, with different carbon content. The carbon content for different forms of coal are:
Anthracite: 87% to 98%
Bituminous: 77% to 87%
Lignite: 60% to 70%
Peat: < 60%
