Question

Arrange three states of matter in ascending order of the inter-molecular force.

Open in App
Solution

  1. The molecules of substances attract each other.
  2. As the inter-molecular distance increases, then the force of attraction starts decreasing.
  3. Solid particles are very closely packed so the inter-molecular distance is extremely less and the inter-molecular force is very strong.
  4. While in liquid inter-molecular distance is more than solids and inter-molecular force is comparatively weaker than solids.
  5. In gases, inter-molecular distance is much more compared to solids and liquids.
  6. Thus, gas particles experience the least inter-molecular force of attraction.

Therefore, the correct order is gas<liquid<solid.
