Bauxite is transported from the quarries to aluminium refineries, where it is crushed and separated into dissolved alumina. Then, the ore is shipped to the smelter for further processing. Next, the ore is purified in the aluminium smelter by using calcinated petroleum coke or petcoke and pitch from colliery. Cryolite, a colourless or white metal, is used as an electrolyte in this stage. It is processed in the smelter with an input of 18,600 Kwh electricity per tonne of ore. At the end of this elaborate process, we get molten aluminium, which is cooled and shaped as per requirement.
