Iliac arteries are three arteries in the ilium and pelvis. They are classified as :
1) Common iliac artery- They arise by bifurcation of the aorta which is present at the level of the fourth lumbar vertebra to form one vessel on each side of the body. They are large arteries and supply blood to the lower trunk and hind limbs.
2) External iliac artery- The outer branch of the common iliac artery on either side of the body that passes beneath the inguinal ligament to form the femoral artery. It is also called as an external iliac artery.
3) Internal iliac artery- The inner branch of the common iliac artery on either side of the body that breaks into many branches and supplies blood mainly to the pelvic and gluteal areas.
