India stood for the UN since its inception and participated in the San Francisco Conference when its inception was conceived. A delegation led by Sir Ramaswami Mudaliar represented India at this conference. When India became independent, it voluntarily decided to be an active member of the UN and enshrined the latter’s basic principles and objectives in its constitution. Time and again, India, in its efforts, has upheld the ideals of the UN.
As a citizen of India, I would support India’s candidature in the UN Security Council:
a. India is the second most populous country in the world; therefore, it requires permanent representation in the Security Council for speaking on behalf of almost one-fifth of the world population.
b. The country can claim to be the largest democracy in the world and also one of the most stable democracies, upholding values of peace, cooperation, fairness and justice.
c. India has fully supported the UN on several occasions of international conflict. It actively helped and assisted the UN peacekeeping forces in all theatres of conflict in Korea, Congo, Cyprus, Lebanon, Somalia, etc. Indian troops and military observers have so far participated in approximately 30 operations.
d. India has been looked up as a potential economic power that is likely to alter the global power equation. At present, India is one of the fastest growing economies of the world with huge foreign investment, large domestic market for consumers and lucrative industrial and agrarian sectors, which no other country in the world can afford to overlook.
e. India played an important role in ensuring the admission of communist China in the UN despite of the stiff opposition by the US. Besides this, India also helped Sri Lanka, Ireland, Bangladesh, Hungary and Romania in becoming the members of the UN.
f. India has played a conspicuous role in promoting freedom of trade and markets, fighting epidemics and fatal diseases, reducing poverty and famines and helping in the advancement of women, children and aged with the help of the UN agencies like UNESCO, UNICEF, WHO and ILO.
g. India has made major economic contributions; rather, it has been one of the main and regular contributors. It was estimated that in 2009, India’s contribution to the UN’s democracy fund was USD $16 million.
h. India is the champion of Human Rights. It has signed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights showing her commitment to the concept of Human Rights.
After looking into the active participation by India in the UN’s activities, one would easily endorse India’s membership in the UN Security Council.
