Question

As a physicist, you put heat into a 500 g solid sample at the rate of 10.0 kJ/min, while recording its temperature as a function of time. You plot your data and obtain the graph shown in figure. What is the latent heat of fusion for this solid in kJ/kg?

Solution

Given - m=500g=0.500kg ,
rate of heat transfer =10.0kJ/min ,
we can see from the graph that the time taken by the solid to change into liquid is , t=31=2min ,
hence , the heat given to solid in 2min , will be , Q=10.0×2=20kJ ,
now , the latent heat of fusion is given by ,
L=Q/m=20/0.500=40kJ/kg
