Think of the relation mentioned in the question a bit intuitively. Just imagine 3 persons A, B & C. If B is running twice as fast as C and A is running thrice as fast as B, then can’t we say that A is running 6 times (3×2) as fast as C?. That’s exactly what we are doing in the chain rule.
If y is a function of t and t is a function of x, then to calculate the rate of change of y with respect to x we will calculate the rate of change of y with respect to t and multiply it with rate change of t with respect to x. So the above statement is true.
