Question

As we move at higher altitude, the value of g_____ .

Open in App
Solution

Acceleration due to gravity:

1. The acceleration of a body due to the gravitational force of attraction is called acceleration due to gravity g.

2. When the height increases beyond a certain on the surface of the Earth, the equation for acceleration due to gravity is given by : gh=gRR+h2

gh⇢ Acceleration due to gravity at a height h

g⇢ Acceleration due to gravity near the surface of the Earth

R⇢ Radius of the Earth

h⇢Height from the surface

3. From the above equation, gis inversely proportional to height h. Thus, if the height from the surface of the Earth increases then g decreases.

Hence, we can say that as we move at higher altitudes, the value of g decreases.
