Ashish got 30% of the maximum marks in an examination and failed by 10 marks. Sahil took the same examination got 40% of the total marks and got 30 marks more than the passing marks. What were the passing marks in the examination?

Let the passing marks be ‘x’ and maximum marks be ‘y’

So, 30% of y = x – 10

(30*y)/100 = x – 10

30y-100x = - 1000 ………(i)

And, 40% of y = x + 30

(40*y)/100 = x + 30

40y -100x = 3000 ……….(ii)

Equating (i) and (ii) we get

-10y = -4000

y = 400

Putting the value of y in eq (i) we get

30*400 – 100x = -1000

12000 – 100x = -1000

-100x = -13000

x = 130
