Question

Aspirin has the formula C9H8O4. How many atoms of oxygen are there in a tablet weighing 360mg?

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Calculating the moles

The molecular mass of aspirin is (9×12)+(8×1)+(16×4)=180g

Numberofmoles=GivenweightMolecularweightNumberofmoles=360×10-3180Numberofmoles=2×10-3moles

Step 2: Calculating the atoms

The total moles of oxygen present in C9H8O4is 4×2×10-3moles

The number of atoms in 1 mole of oxygen is 6.022×1023

the number of atoms in 4×2×10-3moles of oxygen is 4×2×10-3×6.022×1023=4.81×1021

Therefore, the number of atoms are 4.81×1021.
