Question

Assertion :A 0.1 molar solution of acetic acid is a poorer electrical conductor than a 0.1-molar solution of hyrochloric acid. Reason: At the same concentration, the number of acetic acid molecules that ionize in water is less than the number of hydrogen chloride molecules that ionize in water.

Solution

The correct option is A Both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion
Since acetic acid is a weaker acid than hydrochloric acid, at the same concentration, acetic acid ionizes less than hydrochloric acid. Hence acetic acid furnishes fewer ions than hydrochloric acid due to which it is a poorer electrical conductor than hydrochloric acid at the same concentration.
Hence, both assertion and reason are correct and the reason is the correct explanation for assertion.
